When my family was young we lived in a rental property with a shower /bath combo. The only way to fill the bath was with the shower rose,
spraying over a majority of the bath. While bathing my four year old son one afternoon, I left the room briefly to get a clean wash cloth and in my
distracted state I heard a horrifying scream, which shocked me and drew my wife in from outside the house.

Fortunately, he turned the hot water tap off and was being covered in cold water. I can't explain my emotions, as I was extremely relieved but
simultaneously still frightened of the potential consequences and how easily and quickly things could have gone drastically wrong.

This event provided the motivation to explore what was available on the market to assist in the area of "Hot Water Protection",
child safety products and tap safety in general.

There were some options available such as, hot water system thermostats or large bulky tap covers that required permanent fixtures clamped
between the tap and the wall. Disappointingly, none seemed to be a quick simple solution that allowed the operator some flexibility to remove
while also being reasonably priced for young families.

Over the next couple of years, I investigated different design options and materials before landing on the initial design.
Funding was a challenge, but once my wife agreed to using our first house deposit (and a little loan) the tooling was finalised and
tap safety prototypes were produced in Brisbane, Australia in late 1999. After testing with family friends, the first batch hit the market in April 2000.

Twelve years later I am happy to say that Hector the Tap Protector has been sold across Australia. I am also proud to say that, it is still
a 100% Australian designed and manufactured product. In addition, that four year old has grown into a healthy teenager and we finally
got that first home.
